LIB/MAS - Lebanon win big, but coach Sarkis far from “fully satisfied”
SANA’A, Yemen (21st FIBA Asia U18 Championship): WABA U18 champions Lebanon emerged a runaway 96-67 victor over Malaysia on Saturday but coach Ghassen Sarkis was far from satisfied.
“Some of our wins have been big, no doubt, but we can do with a lot of improvement in a lot of areas,” he said.
This was the first game, in four outings, Ahmad Ibrahim didn’t finish as the leading scorer for Lebanon – that honor going to Samer Ozeir.
“In fact that addressed one of our concerns. It was beginning to look like we depend too much on Ibrahim for our offense. We need to sort that out and have more options,” said Sarkis who took Champville to the final of the high profile Lebanese league last season.
“Both of them (Ibrahim and Ozeir, who play in the United States) joined us over the last weekend. They are very good players, but then our combination has gone for a toss,” he said.
“We have been working on it, but it’s not easy to get it going when the team plays for the first time together in the first game of a competition,” the 53-year-old said.
“I think even in defense we need to work more on the transition. But I am confident the boys will pick up game by game,” he added.
Further, Sarkis said: “The real competition has begun today. It is at this stage the real value of any team will be known. I hope we last the test,” he said.
Lebanon, thus took their win-loss to 2-1. Malaysia sunk to 0-3.
Lebanon next play Chinese Taipei on Sunday and Malaysia take on Kazakhstan.
“We have work to do tonight for that game,” Sarkis said of the game against Taipei.
