SANA’A, Yemen (21st FIBA Asia U18 Championship): Spearhead Ahmad Ibrahim scored a game-high 27 points and WABA U18 champions Lebanon rolled past last edition’s silver medalists Kazakhstan for an 83-67 triumph in Group B.
The second successive win for Ghassen Sarkis’ boys thus put them in Group E of the Second Round in the competition. Lebanon had beaten Qatar on the opening day.
“I think our game was better than yesterday,” Sarkis said.
“We matched them (Kazakhstan) physically and hustled them well. I think that was the key to our performance,” he added.
“I am a little disappointed with the way we lost focus especially when we took the lead. That’s something we got plug as early as possible,” Sarkis said.
Lebanon raced ahead 22-12 to close the first quarter and never looked back.
“Ibrahim and Samer Ozeir are beginning to combine better. And today we tried Constantin Kodsi for our outside shots. It paid off,” Sarkis said.
Kodsi converted four of his five three-pointer attempts in his 16-point haul.
“We got better today,” Ibrahim said.
“I myself am beginning to play better together. I think we are on the right track,” he added.
“I am definitely disappointed,” Kazakhstan coach Boris Borissov said.
Alexey Verechshagin’s 25-point team high went in vain. Pavel Ilin scored 16.
“I thought we should have scored more three-pointers,” Borissov. Kazakhstan converted a mere five of their 21 attempts from long range.
“I think we can play better than this. I hope we do,” the coach said.
