SANA’A, Yemen (21st FIBA Asia U18 Championship): Last edition’s silver medalists Kazakhstan arrived in the Yemeni capital with their baggage left behind in the transit airport and had to borrow hosts Yemen’s colors to play their opening Group B game against Korea. And it looked like the loss of their colors seemed to bother them in the opening minutes, as Korea raced ahead 17-5 in the first five minutes and seemed to cruise along.
All that bother for Kazakhstan coach the burly Boris Borissov lasted only till the latter part of the second quarter, as the Middle Asian nation made their to take charge and proceeded along to win 76-69.
Pavel Ilin, Kazakhstan player with the experience of having donned the Senior National Team colors – at last month’s 3rd FIBA Asia Stankovic Cup in Beirut – led Kazakhstan’s cause with 25 points.
The Almaty youngster who was rather subdued in the first half with only nine points, came into his own in the second and went on to record a 83% on the paint.
“I think our team revolves around him,” Borissov said.
Azim Yagodkin supported with 13 points and Pavel Dynnik returned a double-double with a dozen points and as many rebounds – the latter a game-high.
Sangheyok Han was the highest scorer for Korea with 16 points.
